I have always been drawn to French châteaux—the gardens, the candlelight, the gilded rooms, and the sense that history is still lingering in the air. Attending a château event in France feels truly spectacular, like stepping into another world for a few hours. You can almost imagine the carriages arriving, the salons glowing, and guests gathering beneath the evening sky. This guide is for travelers who love romance and wonder, and who dream of escaping into timeless French beauty.

The Grand Siècle Rendez-Vous at Vaux-le-Vicomte is the kind of event that makes you understand why French châteaux continue to capture the imagination. Held at one of the most beautiful estates near Paris, the event brings the world of the 17th century back to life through period dress, candlelight, music, gardens, and a sense of theater that feels both elegant and transportive.

Part of what makes Vaux-le-Vicomte so special is that it is still a privately held family estate, which gives the experience a sense of intimacy and stewardship that feels different from visiting a grand public monument. The château is spectacular on its own, but during the Grand Siècle Rendez-Vous, the entire estate seems to come alive. Guests arrive in costume, wander through the château and formal gardens, and gather as the evening light begins to fade.
Entertainment unfolds throughout the gardens, with stilt walkers, jugglers, fire performers, musicians, musketeers, falconry, carriage rides, and baroque dance adding to the atmosphere. Inside the château, guests can take part in period-inspired games—from traditional wooden games to games of chance reminiscent of roulette and hasard, the early dice game that later inspired craps. The magical moment came just before midnight, when the fireworks began. My husband and I were sitting on the back steps of the château, me still in my gown with my shoes off, quietly hidden beneath the layers of my dress. Around us were other guests who had been there for the entire day—tired, quiet, and completely mesmerized as the sky erupted above the gardens. For a moment, I wondered if guests of the château hundreds of years ago had done the very same thing: slipped off their shoes, gathered on the steps, and watched the night unfold in awe.
